Dominican Republic Mission Notes
It is exciting to look ahead to the 2014 mission trip to Santiago, Dominican Republic. This will be a life changing trip for the team.
Here are some meeting dates and times the team will come together leading up to the trip in July. The team will meet once a month toplan, talk about culture, and give important information. The meetings will take place from 7:30-8:30 PM on Wednesday nights in the upstairs F-26 classroom. Please mark your calendar for the following dates:
**Sunday, July 13th from 3-4 PM**
Currently team members need to start the process for getting a passport. If you do not currently have a passport, please get the process started since it sometimes takes a while for the passports to come back. You may start the process here:
Secondly, please come to the March meeting with 20 plus addresses of family and friends. We will be sending out mission letters to help cover the financial cost. At the meeting in March we will supply you with the materials needed to send out your letters.
Finally, here's an app to help you start to learn Spanish: Duolingo. It's free and works much like Rosetta Stone.
EXCITING 2014 Mission Trip Information
First I want to thank each one of you for the support you have shown to Summit Student Ministries. From volunteering to bringing your child here each Sunday night, I want to thank you for making this ministry a priority!
The summer is just around the corner. Just like the major stores already displaying Christmas decorations, we want to put our 2014 Summer Mission Trips on display and share the vision for youth mission trips moving forward. We are excited to announce that there will be two trips in 2014. The first will be a local, in-state mission trip to Daytona Beach and the second will be an international mission trip to the Dominican Republic. I hope you take a moment to read about the exciting trips coming up!
All throughout scripture you can read the various types of missions that Jesus and His disciples taught and led. From serving in their own towns to traveling many miles, they saw the importance of serving God’s people whether here or far away. That is the model I want to have here at First UMC Lakeland. I want out students to serve locally, nationally, and internationally during their time with us. So the vision for our summer mission trips will look a bit different than in recent years. In 2014 we will serve locally and internationally per the two trips listed below. During the summer of 2015, we will focus nationally by going on a trip similar to the A.S.P./ReCreation Mission Trip. Alternating summer mission trips will give a student from 7th thru 12th grade multiple ways and multiple opportunities to serve. In the last chapter of Matthew, Jesus tells His disciples to “Go and make disciples of all the nations!” With this group of students here at First UMC Lakeland, I am confident that we can be the hands and feet of Christ, making disciples to build the kingdom!
Both 7 & 8 Grades and High School
We will be going to Community UMC in Daytona Beach to help serve the church and surrounding neighborhood. Community UMC is a church dedicated to helping serve the less fortunate in the surrounding area by providing meals, clothing, and other specific needs. Our mission will be to help Community UMC with these processes along with construction improvements to the church. We are keeping cost in mind with this trip so our target price will be around $250.00 for this mission. Get ready to serve the needy and surf the waves with us in Daytona Beach!

High School Only
I am excited to announce that we will be offering an international mission trip the summer of 2014 to the Dominican Republic. We will be going to Cuesta Arena, a province of Santiago, thru Renewed Hope Mission. Renewed Hope Mission was developed thru the vision of a friend of mine and former employee of First UMC Lakeland, Sarah Rosenberg. Since 2008 many church groups have made mission trips to Cuesta Arena and helped by putting in water pumps, buildings, and most importantly sharing the love of Jesus. During our time with Renewed Hope Mission, we will help with construction needs and offer a VBS style experience to the neighboring children. On November 17th at 5:00pm in F1 Sarah Rosenberg will be here to give you a deeper insight on Renewed Hope Mission and what to expect on our trip to the Dominican Republic. I hope to see you there!
